Picnics are indeed one of the best things about summer and this summer Spier is kicking things up a notch with the launch of their fabulous new dedicated picnic deli, the Spier Farm Kitchen. Spier has always been a popular picnic spot but there’s no doubt that the newly opened Farm Kitchen makes picnicking at Spier easier than ever before. The farm-to-table deli allows visitors to shop for a wide range of delicious eats and treats to customise their own tasty farm picnic and I must say it’s the most fun I’ve had at a picnic in a long while.
Housed in a more than 200-year-old building overlooking the historic farmyard and headed up by Executive Chef Lolli Heyns, the Spier Farm Kitchen offers all sorts of fresh goodies made using fresh, seasonal produce grown organically in the Werf Food Garden right by the Farm Kitchen, as well as other locally sourced ingredients. Stepping into the farm kitchen is truly a treat for the senses with everything from freshly baked bread, handcrafted pies, and quiche to cold meats, cheeses, salads, and more on offer. There’s even a dessert table piled high with sweet delights to enjoy after your lunch. To drink there’s a selection of Spier’s delicious wines as well as ciders, beers, coffee, or fresh fruit juices.
The Farm Kitchen makes creating your picnic super fun and oh-so-easy. Forget packing everything but the kitchen sink for a simple picnic, at Spier you can just arrive hungry. To start your picnic experience grab a picnic basket at the door and start filling it with food and drinks to enjoy on the lawns outside or on the banks of the Spier Dam. Once your basket is full, head to the teller and they’ll tally up your basket. You can also hire a picnic blanket and wine glasses and even buy biodegradable plates and cutlery for your picnic at the Farm Kitchen.
Spier’s new Farm Kitchen is nothing short of brilliant. The food is exceptional and I love how laid-back the whole concept is. It’s so refreshing to know that you can head to the farm and enjoy a spur of the moment picnic without the hassle of calling ahead to book or remembering to bring a picnic set. We had the most incredible afternoon relaxing on the lawns nibbling on freshly made picnic grub and sipping on delicious wine and I will definitely be going back, again and again, this summer!
The Spier Farm Kitchen is open 7 days a week, including public holidays, from 10:00 to 16:30 daily. For more information visit the Spier website.
