Picnics are indeed one of the best things about summer and this summer Spier is kicking things up a notch with the launch of their fabulous new dedicated picnic deli, the Spier Farm Kitchen. The new spot allows visitors to shop for a wide range of delicious eats and treats to either customise their own tasty farm picnic or take home to enjoy later.
Housed in a more than 200-year-old building overlooking the historic farmyard and headed up by Executive Chef Lolli Heyns, the Spier Farm Kitchen fully encapsulates the farm-to-table ethos of Spier by using seasonal produce grown organically in the Werf Food Garden right by the Farm Kitchen, as well as other locally sourced ingredients, to provide nutritious, farm-style food.
The deli-style spot caters to a wide range of palates and allows guests to create their own picnics from a host of freshly prepared options. Choose from delicious foods like rotisserie chicken, handcrafted pies and sandwiches made with woodfired Hoghouse bread (the roast veg and pesto or the Farmer Angus roast beef with aioli are amazing options!). Build your salads at the Salad Station and for the sweet-toothed, there’s Spier’s famous organic 70% Couverture chocolate meringue amongst other decadent treats.
The deli also caters for those who are looking for healthier options to nibble on – Chef Lolli has even developed a healthier range of sweet treats with natural sugars, including a yummy citrus almond cake. To drink, there is, of course, Spier’s wines as well as juices, cider, beer and coffee to go.
For the take-home selection, there are Farmer Angus’ pasture-reared products including eggs, biltong, bone broth, chicken, pork and beef. There’s also plenty of divine condiments and dressings, spice rubs, honey, dried fruit and nuts. In addition to sweet treats like cookies, Darling Toffees, farm-made biscotti and rusks, there is also a range of picnic accessories and homeware available.
The Spier Farm Kitchen is self-service, and guests are welcome to hire a blanket and sit anywhere to enjoy their custom picnics, from the stoep to the giant oak on the Werf, to the banks of the Spier Dam. Pre-made picnic baskets must be ordered online and collected at the Kitchen between 12:00 and 14:00, while vegetarian and children’s baskets need to be ordered at least 24-hours in advance.
