Most people will agree that there’s nothing quite like a home cooked meal. Mostly because home cooking usually involves using real ingredients and plenty of love. But, with many people leading super busy lives, home cooking can often take a back seat to convenience meaning that quick and bland wins out over all things fresh and tasty. But now, in a rather exciting twist, healthy home cooking is back on trend and meal-prep subscription boxes like UCook and Daily Dish have been expanding rapidly in the local market. These meal-in-a-box solutions have become a firm favourite with young professionals but can also be quite pricey for the average person. Which is why we’re beyond excited about the news that Checkers has just launched a brand new range of Ready to Chef meal kits, making it more affordable for South Africans to try out meal-in-a-box cooking.

For this new venture, Checkers has upped its game and hired professional local chefs to design a bunch of gourmet dinner options specifically for busy people who want a delicious home-cooked meal but lack the time to prepare. The Ready to Chef kits enable shoppers to purchase all the ingredients needed for a chef-approved meal in one convenient box. The box contains all the pre portioned ingredients (so wastage is minimised!) along with a step-by-step recipe card, and QR code that links to a how-to cooking video.

Checkers Ready to ChefCheckers is the first retailer to offer an in-store ready-to-cook service with Woolworths expected to enter the market soon. The Checkers Ready to Chef meal kits are priced between R119.99 and R179.99 per box and feed up to two people. UCook and Daily Dish, charge between R105 and R110 per person per meal while Checkers’ meals start at R60 per person per meal and go up to R90 a head per meal.

Shoppers can choose from four different recipes (including both meat and vegetarian options) in store each week with a total of 16 kits in the entire range. The kits include mouthwatering options such as Butter chicken curry with roti, Cauliflower cottage pie, Asian beef and sesame seed salad, Mushroom, pea and mint risotto, Beef stroganoff with zucchini spaghetti, Sweet and sour pork with jasmine rice, and Sweet potato and lentil dahl curry with buttered naan.
