It’s obvious the gin trend isn’t going anywhere and this summer we will all no doubt be enjoying a few gin and tonics in the sun. But sometimes the schlep of taking a full bottle gin, a couple of tonic waters, and a glass to mix it all in just isn’t worth it. Luckily for South African gin lovers, life just got a little bit easier with the launch of Greenleaf & Terroir pre-mixed gin and tonic. This new mixed drink comes to us just in time for summer and is pretty much the best thing since sliced bread!
But this isn’t just any G&T pre-mix, this is the good stuff! Greenleaf + Terroir (or G+T for short) is a pre-mix of local small-batch gin and craft tonic water served in easy-to-drink glass bottles. It’s everything a good G&T should be – crisp, refreshing, and full of flavour. I got the chance to try a few bottles of G+T and can safely say it’s going to be your new favourite summer drink. Whether you’re heading out for sundowners on the mountain, a picnic in the park, or simply hanging out by the pool, this South African creation will be your go-to drink.
The gin used to produce the drink is distilled with Pinotage grapes grown in the Durbanville area, just outside of Cape Town and gives G+T a unique taste that is hard to find in any other gin on the market in SA. The base spirit used to create the gin in G+T is first mixed with distilled Pinotage wine before being distilled further with juniper berries, hand-peeled lemons and limes, coriander and fennel. Apart from the juniper berries, which are imported from Tuscany, all the other ingredients in G+T are locally grown.
As for the tonic, it is also produced locally, in partnership with Barker and Quinn. This delicious tonic water is made in small batches, using all natural ingredients, from earth-friendly suppliers and is arguably the best tonic water on the South African market right now. The two mixed together makes for a delicious pre-mix that doesn’t compromise on quality and is just as good, if not better, than if you mixed it yourself!
Greenleaf + Terroir is best served over ice in a glass but you can also enjoy it straight out of the bottle. While the mix is delicious enough not to need anything else you can fancy it up and enhance the flavours with your favourite garnishes such as lemon, orange, berries or fresh herbs.
Greenleaf + Terroir is currently available from Checkers Liquor Stores, Tops Stores in the Western Cape and KZN; selected Vida-E cafes; Norman Goodfellows, Roeland Liquors and online from Yuppiechef. The recommended retail price is R22.99 a bottle or R89.99 for a four-pack. For more information visit the Greenleaf + Terroir website.
