Fancy food is great and all, but sometimes you just want something simple and delicious — like a gooey, cheesey toasted sandwich. But we’re not talking any old, do-it-yourself midnight snack toastie, we’re talking toasties with a bit of a gourmet twist, made with freshly baked bread and top-quality cheddar cheese. Luckily for those living and working in Cape Town’s southern suburbs there’s a fabulous new foodie find waiting inside interior design haven, Block & Chisel, Diep River. Their signature dish? Delectable toasted sarmies! The perfect spot for anyone who appreciates delicious grub and being surrounded by beautiful things, the new coffee and toastie emporium, Block Café is all about good food, prepared simply.

The new Block Café, was designed by Block & Chisel directors Paul McAdam and Susan McCoubrey, and offers a quiet place to fill up on decor, coffee, and good food, away from the maddening crowds. With a beautiful oak bar, showing off the delectable baked goods, and a delightful mix of classic and modern design, the stylish eatery is the type of place you’ll want to while away the hours on a Saturday morning. The space has been cleverly designed to inspire the level of comfort, style and enjoyment that we all strive for in our own homes and diners have the option to take a seat at a traditional restaurant-style table or sink into one of the many sumptuous couches and armchairs dotted around the space. What’s more, all the décor items in the café, from the furniture to the cushions, is available to purchase!

The Block CaféAs for the food, Chef Courtney Ah-Sing has created an uncomplicated, delicious menu with signature dishes including moreish toasties made with fresh sourdough and delicious cheddar, as well as quality, fairtrade coffee sourced from Africa. Light breakfasts and snacks are served all through the day and, if something on the menu doesn’t quite sing to you, then you can always check out the daily specials board for new offerings or freshly baked cakes to enjoy along with your coffee.

Speaking of coffee, caffeine-obsessed diners can’t go wrong with the Boetie Bester — a blend of strong coffee with a dash of condensed milk and milk foam. It’s a treat Block & Chisel’s master craftsman Sibley McAdam enjoyed during his school holidays visiting his good friends on their family farm in the Karoo and is just one of many personal touches diners will find in the cafe.

The Block CaféThe Block Café is open weekdays from 9:00 to 16:00, Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:30 and public holidays from 09:00 to 12:30.
