Let’s face it; it may be 2015 but the whole idea of spray tanning or self-tanning still has a bit of a stigma. These days women, and men do the craziest things for beauty, some of them quite dangerous, but yet, for some reason the idea of protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays and opting to get golden brown skin with a spray tan is still seen as ‘odd’ or embarrassing by many. Of course, it’s a double standard of note because, as a gal who was born with a pigment disadvantage I am often told by friends and strangers that I need to get a tan. So, I ask you; if I can’t tan in the sun and it’s considered weird to get a spray tan then what is a girl like me to do? Say “screw you society” and do it anyway, that’s what! Of course, it is important to note that not all spray tans or self-tanners are created equal. So, if you’re thinking of taking the plunge and getting a good spray then you need to hear all about my experience with the gold standard of spray tans. I tried Vita Liberata, an organic spray tan brand, a few weeks ago and fell in love with it. Here’s why you will too.
The thing I love most about Vita Liberata is how natural it looks. I convinced the boyfriend to do it with me, you know so I could compare our results and was amazed to see that even though we had the same spray tan colour, our results were completely different. The boyfriend’s skin is a little more open to tanning than mine and his tan came out a little more defined than mine did. Our tanning guru explained that Vita Liberata is unique in that almost no two clients have the same colour results. This is because the product works with your skin to bring out your natural colour – or basically the colour you would go if you were to tan in the sun. Both of our tans were super subtle and natural and I loved that there were no streaks to speak of.
Another plus of this product is the fact that it dries quickly (hence why there is no streaking). Which means no more sitting around completely starkers for 15 minutes while you wait for it to dry. The product dried almost instantly and I loved that I could put my clothing back on after the spray tan and go about my day. I had to leave the product on for 8 hours to let the colour develop and while I was a bit dark a few hours later, once I had a shower the colour looked absolutely awesome. But that’s not all – Vita Liberata also smells great and moisturises your skin! You don’t have to put up with that weird oat or wet biscuit smell when using this product and your skin feels wonderfully soft afterwards.
The brand started in 2007 so it’s been going for a little while now, and has taken the tanning world by storm. I love that the products are completely non-toxic and 80 percent organic (the products contain natural extracts like ylang-ylang, seaweed, pomegranate and grape) so they’re good for your skin and the environment. This is huge for the tanning industry as these organic products not only help protect the health of the tanning therapists, who use the product all day long but also the clients whose skin has to put up with the product for a few days afterwards.
I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is curious about spray tanning or anyone who has tried spray tanning before but didn’t like the results. With Vita Liberata, there’s no orange tinge and the tan lasts a good few days if you look after it carefully. Mine lasted about 10 days and faded naturally over a few days. And, if you’re not sure about going full tilt with a full body spray tan then you can also try their range of at-home tanning products.
A Vita Liberata spray tan will set you back about R400 for a full body tan and is available at a range of salons in Cape Town, Johannesburg as well as the rest of South Africa. Visit the Vita Liberata website for more info on stockists.
