Tonka Bean’s Artisanal Doughnuts Give Krispy Kreme a Run for Their Money!
Not so impressed with the arrival of Krispy Kreme in Joburg? Well, fear not because local spot, Tonka Bean Bakery is giving them a run for their money! Joburgers are going bonkers for their oh-so-scrumptious doughnuts on social media and it’s easy to see why. Located in Fourways, the bakery’s custard-filled treats have been featured on many local celebrities’ and foodies’ Instagram and Twitter accounts, with many claiming that Tonka Bean’s doughnuts are the best in Joburg!
The mouth-watering doughnuts, filled with vanilla bean crème pâtissière are pretty much what dreams are made of and will drive any sugar-free dieter to re-think their life choices just for a taste. Now, you might be sick of hearing the word artisanal thrown around but these carefully crafted doughnuts are worth the snooty title! Owner and baker, Shakil Khan works tirelessly to ensure that every batch of the French-style doughnuts comes out just right and the dough used to make them is said to be similar to brioche dough, very soft and buttery.
For now, the doughnuts are only available in one variety but word on the street is we can expect more delicious flavours in the future, including delights like dark chocolate and peanut butter. The Tonka Bean Bakery custard filled doughnuts are currently available from the bakery in Fourways at R16 a pop (but hurry they sell out fast!) The bakery also has a few other stockists in Joburg including Melissa’s The Food Shop in Parkhurst but you’ll have to pay a premium for them with Melissa’s selling them at R22 each.
Not a fan of doughnuts? You’re in luck! Tonka Bean Bakery also offers a wide variety of other delicious baked treats. Every recipe used to create their delicious fare is based on traditional French methods and, just like the doughnuts, is prepared with a very close attention to detail. On the menu you will find kouign-amann (pronounce queen a-man), fresh croissants, brioche burger buns, chocolate brownies, baked cheesecake and even freshly baked sourdough bread and traditional French loaf!
