Back to Basics: Bull’s Hooker Joe van Zyl Explains Why the Hooker is Rugby’s ‘Jack of All Trades’ Position
After years of working as an Editor and writer for…
Even for the most loyal fans, rugby can be all sorts of confusing. In between learning about knock-ons, conversions, and line-outs, there’s also the 15 positions on the field, each with a specific role and responsibility. Learning it all seems daunting to say the least. Fortunately, BrightRock is doing the most with an innovative online series designed to help new (and seasoned) rugby fans brush up on their rugby knowledge.
BrightRock teamed up with the Bulls and renowned sports broadcaster, Cato Louw, to produce ‘1 to 15: What rugby players actually do!’ Each episode features a one-on-one with a Bulls player to break down their position in a fun and casual way. Plus, you get to learn a little more about the player, the man behind the jersey!
This week, we’re zooming in on Bull’s hooker Joe van Zyl to find out why his position requires some of the most versatility on the field. Hookers are just as strong as the props, but with a little extra speed and agility. You’ll find them in the scrum, ruck, maul or a lineout. Like many of the backs, they need to have great ball skills, footwork, and speed to be able to do what they do best. This is the role the hooker plays on the field, a role that Vodacom Bulls hooker, Joe van Zyl, has perfected!
Watch as the talented forward, along with his strength and conditioning coach, Andre Volsteedt, chats to Cato about what we need to know about the versatile roles and responsibilities a hooker has on the field:
