Puma ForeverRun Nitro 2

Are your daily runs starting to feel like a pain in the neck knee? Are you constantly plagued by niggles and injuries? It might be time to ditch your old your running shoes and lace up the Puma ForeverRun Nitro 2.

The second iteration of Puma’s stability shoe, the ForeverRun Nitro 2 is a true stability shoe that beginners and everyday athletes will absolutely love. It’s the ideal recovery run shoe, if you’re the type of runner who likes to rotate between a few pairs, but would also work just as well as you’re only running shoe if you’re new to the running game. So, say goodbye to niggles and hello to a runner’s-high, because the Puma ForeverRun Nitro 2 is here to help you keep running.

Built with consistency and longevity in mind, Puma says the ForeverRun Nitro 2 features improved stability, increased heel support, and upgraded comfort to keep runners out on the road for longer.

This new version of Puma’s stability running shoe takes everything we loved about the original ForeverRun Nitro and gives it a glow-up. Think more cushion, more support, and a vibe that says; “I’ve got you, girl.” Afraid of commitment? No stress, making the decision of which running shoe to buy can be overwhelming (not to mention expensive!). So, I’ve been pounding the pavement in the ForeverRun Nitro 2, testing it out so you can get a little more insight into whether this is the shoe for you.

First impressions: Beefier stack, comfier ride

Out of the box, this new version of the popular stability running shoe screams ‘upgrade’. With a beefier stack (38mm at the heel/ 28mm up front, upgraded from a 36mm heel/ 26mm forefoot), the Nitro 2 feels like you’re stepping onto a cloud, that’s been hitting the gym and smashing its daily protein goals. Additional TPU support gives the shoe a well-calculated firmness that keeps the heel stable and supported through every foot strike.

Frothy but with a kick, like a good latte, Puma’s fancy new co-moulded Nitro foam ensures every stride in these shoes is smooth and bouncy. This new approach to the sole helps runners get the best of both worlds: stability without sacrificing the responsiveness of the Nitrofoam that runners know and love. The sole combines a soft Nitro core for cushion and bounce, with a firmer Nitro rim for guidance in the stride. The result? Stability in motion!

At 255g (women’s size 6UK), it’s certainly not the lightest running shoe on the block. But honestly, that extra heft, upped from the original’s 224g, is barely noticeable underfoot thanks to the shoe’s responsiveness. So they’re not built for speedwork, but I say, why rush perfection?

What about fit? The knit upper has got some stretch with structure and support provided by Puma’s PwrTape for a snug fit that doesn’t feel too constricting. Bonus: the toe box is roomier than the original, which will appease those who like to get a splayed-out plant with their foot. This is the first thing I noticed when slipping on this new ForeverRun shoe. You’ve heard of restless legs? Well. I’ve got restless toes, especially when I’m running, and my toes have plenty of space to wiggle in this roomy shoe. Adding even more comfort to an already great upper is a plush heel collar that ensures you feel just as comfortable after hitting the 10km mark as you did during your warm-up.

The ride: More stable than day-old sourdough

Okay, let’s talk about the real star here: the ride. Overpronators, you’re going to love this! The Nitro 2 is all about stability, helping you to keep your stride in line. The running shoe’s wider midsole (made from improved dual-density Nitrofoam) offers excellent cushioning and support, while upgraded Runguide technology gives a gentle nudge to keep the foot aligned and centred through each stride for a smooth and enjoyable running experience. Like your long-suffering, supportive bestie, this shoe’s got your back.

Testers (and my own two feet) agree: running in this shoe is a dream. Don’t expect to channel your inner Usain Bolt, though. These babies aren’t built for speed, they’re ideal for easy days, long runs, and chilled recovery runs, where you’re not trying to smash a PB. If you’re new to running, you’ll love these too! Training for a couch to 10km? You’ll cross the finish line and score that finisher’s medal with a smile on your face running in the ForeverRun Nitro 2.

While the shoe has a great bouncy ride, it’s more restrained than some of its maximum cushioning counterparts, prioritising stability over a snappy toe-off. The ForeverRun Nitro 2 offers a high level of cushioning without that excessive softness, which is ideal for heavier runners. The shoe’s jaw-dropping 10mm drop still contributes to a snappy heel-to-forefoot transition, but thanks to the heel compression underfoot, the drop doesn’t feel as pronounced. You would be convinced it’s slightly lower and closer to 7 or 8mm. This makes it a very comfortable shoe for heel strikers to run in without feeling overly tall.

Overall, I loved the firm yet balanced feeling of running in this shoe, and with the flexible forefoot rocker, you get a smooth toe-off with every stride.

Traction and durability: Ready for anything

The outsole on the ForeverRun Nitro 2 is a chef’s kiss. Wet pavements, slippery paths, or that gravel trail you accidentally wandered onto, they’re all child’s play for PumaGrip. These shoes stick to the ground like they mean it. The rubber is thick and tough, and after clocking a fair amount of kilometres in mine, they still look ready to rumble. Compared to the original, the wider base of the ForeverRun Nitro 2 gives you more ground contact to play with, so you’re less likely to wobble on uneven turf. Basically, they’re the all-weather warriors your running wardrobe needs.

Is the ForeverRun Nitro right for you?

If you loved the first ForeverRun Nitro, you’ll adore this upgraded version. It’s sure to be a new BFF for everyday runners. While the original was a little lighter and had more of a zippy feel, the ForeverRun Nitro 2 doubles down on stability and plushness, making it a champ for anyone who needs more support and stability. If your knees are begging for TLC, this sequel is your soulmate.

The ForeverRun Nitro 2 is also a great shoe for laid-back runners; whether you’re a newbie lacing up for the first time or a seasoned gal who overpronates just enough to notice. Speed demons and neutral runners might find it a bit much. These are made for ‘low and slow’ runs, so if you’re looking to ace that zone 2 pace you’re in for a treat with these.

How does it stack up?

At R3,399, the Puma ForeverRun Nitro 2 isn’t cheap, but it’s a fair price for a ‘speciality’ shoe with all the bells and whistles. For that price, you’re getting top-tier cushioning, excellent stability, and a durable build that’ll last through your next marathon training. It’s a steal compared to competitors in the stability shoe game, like the Asics Gel-Kayano 31 which clocks in at R4,000.

Plus, if looks are important to you, the ForeverRun Nitro two wins in the style game. It’s a great-looking shoe, especially in Puma’s new “Cool Weather” ice-blue-grey colourway. These clean lines and sporty silhouette of this shoe mean you can rock them to brunch post-run without a second thought.

So, should you snag a pair? If you’re after a shoe that feels like a spa day for your soles and keeps you steady without cramping your style, say yes to the ForeverRun Nitro 2. Your knees will thank you.
