Interview: The Laser Beautique’s Tzvia Hermann On Microneedling

Tzvia Hermann founder and co-owner of The Laser Beautique is an impressive woman, to say the least. The successful serial entrepreneur turned her frustrating and painful experience into a thriving business to help others gain the confidence they never thought possible.
Tzvia’s journey with Laser Beautique (TLB) started at a young age, in her mother’s beauty salon. Tzvia was qualified by experience from the age of 15 in everything from manicures and pedicures to facials and skin care regimes, and she developed her own love for the beauty industry.

In 2009 Tzvia and her husband Neil opened the first Laser Beautique at Morningside Shopping Centre in Johannesburg. Today, TLB is a national brand with aesthetic clinics in Ballito, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria. But they didn’t stop there, in the last 10 years, Tzvia and Neil have developed their very own line of in-clinic and home-held revolutionary devices for hair removal, skin rejuvenation, tightening, lifting and toning etc.
It’s safe to say, Tzvia is an expert voice in the beauty and aesthetic industries, so we chatted with her to get some answers to the burning questions we had about microneedling.
WS: How effective are at-home treatments (i.e. derma rollers) compared to microneedling in a clinic?
TH: I am really not a fan of DIY needling. I’m especially not a fan of derma rollers. If one insists on DYI needling treatments, I would recommend a pen, but there are important differences in how effective and safe they are, with some scary reasons to avoid DIY needling.
Firstly, I prefer a needling pen over rollers for several reasons. Needling pens offer more precise and controlled microneedling treatments compared to rollers. With adjustable needle depths and automated movements, needling pens ensure consistent results and minimise the risk of uneven penetration or skin damage that can occur with rollers. Additionally, needling pens are typically designed for professional use, incorporating sterile needles and reducing the risk of infection. Their design also enhances comfort during treatment. Choosing a needling pen under professional guidance ensures safer, more effective microneedling sessions tailored to individual skin concerns and goals.
Without proper skin training and sterilisation, DIY needling can lead to skin damage, infections, and uneven results. One can also exacerbate existing skin conditions like acne or cause irritation, particularly if not done correctly.
Professional supervision ensures safety and optimal results, making it crucial to consider your specific skincare needs and prioritize professional care for micro-needling treatments.
WS: What are the potential side effects of microneedling?
TH: Microneedling, when performed by a trained professional using sterile equipment, is generally considered safe. However, like any procedure, it can have potential side effects, especially if not performed correctly or if proper aftercare is not followed.
Some potential side effects of microneedling include redness and swelling, bruising, dryness and flaking, sensitivity, mild pain and discomfort, allergic reactions, infections, Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH), and allergic reactions.
- Redness and Swelling: Mild redness and swelling of the treated area are common immediately after microneedling. This usually resolves within a few hours to a few days, depending on the depth of the treatment.
- Bruising: Some individuals may experience bruising, especially if the treatment is performed at a deeper level or on sensitive areas of the skin.
- Dryness and Flaking: The skin may feel dry or flaky for a few days following microneedling as it heals and regenerates.
- Sensitivity to Products: The skin may be more sensitive to skincare products, especially those containing active ingredients, for a period after microneedling. It’s important to use gentle products and avoid harsh chemicals immediately post-treatment.
- Mild Pain or Discomfort: While discomfort during microneedling is usually minimal, some people may experience mild pain or discomfort during the procedure.
- Infection: There is a risk of infection if the microneedling device or the treated area is not properly sterilised, or if post-treatment care instructions are not followed diligently. This risk is minimised when the procedure is performed in a clean, professional setting.
- Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): Individuals with darker skin tones may be at risk for developing temporary hyperpigmentation in the treated area. This risk can be minimised by using appropriate techniques and avoiding excessive sun exposure post-treatment.
- Allergic Reactions: Although rare, some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to topical products or numbing creams used during the procedure.
WS: Who is a good candidate for microneedling? Does your skin need to be in a certain condition before the treatment?
TH: Microneedling is generally suitable for most skin types and conditions, but there are considerations regarding skin condition prior to treatment and who makes a good candidate:
It is important that the client has no active infections or irritations prior to treatment, such as cold sores, acne outbreaks, or significant irritation. We also check that the client has not experienced any recent sunburn. It’s important to avoid microneedling if you have recently had a sunburn or significant sun exposure that could compromise skin integrity. You should also avoid microneedling on areas with open wounds, cuts, or abrasions. Skincare is another important factor, we advise clients to avoid using harsh skincare products like retinoids or acids in the days leading up to microneedling to minimise skin sensitivity.
You’re a good candidate for microneedling if you have mild to moderate skin concerns. Microneedling is effective for treating mild to moderate acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin texture, and mild pigmentation issues. Candidates should have generally healthy skin, with realistic expectations about what microneedling can achieve. Good candidates are committed to following post-treatment care instructions provided by their skincare professional to optimise results and minimise potential side effects.
WS: How would microneedling help someone dealing with acne scars?
TH: Microneedling can be an effective treatment option for improving the appearance of acne scars. Microneedling works by creating tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the skin using fine needles. These micro-injuries stimulate the skin’s natural healing response, triggering the production of collagen and elastin fibers. Collagen is crucial for skin elasticity and smoothness, while elastin helps maintain skin shape and firmness. The treatment can help improve scar texture by helping remodel and fill in acne scars, leading to smoother skin texture over time. This is particularly beneficial for atrophic acne scars, which are depressions or pits in the skin.
Microneedling is effective for various types of acne scars, including rolling scars, boxcar scars, and some ice-pick scars. It can help blend the edges of scars with the surrounding skin and reduce their visibility.
It’s important to note that while microneedling can improve the appearance of acne scars, results may vary depending on the individual’s skin type, scar severity, and adherence to post-treatment care. It is also important to note that significant improvement in acne scars usually requires multiple microneedling sessions spaced several weeks apart. The number of sessions needed depends on the severity of the scars and individual skin response.
WS: Outside of acne marks and hyperpigmentation, what else can microneedling help with?
TH: Microneedling can help with several skin concerns including fine lines and wrinkles, surgical and injury scars, enhance product absorption, stimulate hair growth on the scalp, improve sun damage and uneven skin texture, as well as help reduce the appearance of stretch marks, and enlarged pores. It’s important to note that while microneedling can be effective for these concerns, results can vary depending on factors such as the severity of the condition and the individual’s skin type.
WS: On the day of microneedling treatment, is there anything a client should or shouldn’t do before?
TH: Make sure to cleanse your skin thoroughly on the day of your treatment. Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and inform your practitioner about any medications and skin conditions before the appointment. Make sure you also take the time to prepare your post-care products as recommended, so you’re all set up to take your care of your skin after the treatment.
Avoid intense exercise, alcohol consumption, and taking any blood-thinning medications, like aspirin, before your treatment. Don’t use any topical retinoids (Retin-A) on the skin a few days leading up to the treatment and refrain from waxing, using depilatory creams or harsh exfoliants on the treatment area.
WS: What about aftercare and downtown? Is there any downtime after microneedling and what should clients avoid doing after treatment?
TH: Clients can expect mild redness and swelling, similar to a sunburn, which usually goes away within a day. Your skin might feel sensitive or dry temporarily. After your treatment make sure you protect your skin from the sun and use SPF 30+ sunscreen. Keep your skin hydrated with a gentle moisturiser and avoid makeup and strong skincare products for 24-48 hours. Don’t touch or pick at treated areas and skip intense exercise for the first day or two.
Long-term, be sure to drink plenty of water, gradually reintroduce skincare products, and consider multiple sessions for the best results.
WS: How many microneedling sessions are typically required to get the results you’re looking for?
TH: This is dependent on the client’s desired results and skin condition. Using the right ampoules dramatically speeds up results. Using triple sterilised ampoules is imperative. Many practitioners in South Africa use serums instead of sterile ampoules.
Using a triple sterilised ampoule during microneedling is crucial to prevent infections and skin irritation. If you don’t use a properly sterilised ampoule you risk introducing bacteria or contaminants into your skin, potentially leading to infections. Your skin could become irritated or develop allergic reactions and the treatment may not be as effective in improving your skin’s condition. Serious complications could occur if the skin barrier is compromised, so always be sure to ask plenty of questions before choosing your microneedling practitioner.
It’s always advisable to consult with a qualified skincare professional before undergoing microneedling. They can assess your skin condition, discuss your goals, and determine if microneedling is the right treatment for you. They will also provide personalised recommendations based on your skin type, concerns, and medical history.
