Nokia Maker Launches New Phone That You Can Upgrade & Repair Yourself

Nokia-maker HMD has been a little quiet on the smartphone front as of late, but the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer is back with a new range of smartphones under the HMD label, dropping the Nokia name from their next-gen devices.

The most impressive of the bunch is the HMD Pulse Pro, but what makes this device so interesting is that HMD wants to put the power of repairs and upgrades back into the hands of consumers, as the Pulse Pro allows you to fix the device on your own (within reason, of course).

Each device in the new HMD Pulse range is built to be repairable, HMD calls it ‘Gen 1 repairability’, empowering owners to replace a damaged display, bent charging port, or a depleted battery, without an engineering degree. Users can simply pick up a self-repair kit in partnership with iFixit.

The HMD Pulse Pro features a 6.56-inch HD+ HID display (1,612×720), Unisoc 606 CPU, 6GBs of RAM, 128GBs of storage, and a 50 MP camera and 2 MP depth sensor on the back. Interestingly, the Pulse Pro incorperates an equally powerful selfie camera on the front, with a 50MP Selfie Camera along with Selfie Gesture Navigation and the Pulse Pro’s AI Super Portrait mode, rendering even the darkest selfie as clear as day.

It also has NFC, a 3.5mm headphone jack (thank goodness), a side fingerprint sensor, and a 5,000 mAh battery. It also runs on Android 14 with HMD’s more appreciated and cleaner version of Google’s mobile OS without all the bloatware.

The HMD Pulse Pro comes in three colour shades: Glacier Green, Twilight Purple and Black Ocean. Additionally, the Pulse Pro in Glacier Green has its own colour-matched charger which is sold separately.

The HMD Pulse Pro is priced at 179 Euros, which equates to just over R3,500, making it a really enticing option for those looking for an affordable yet versatile Android device.

There are also two other devices in the Pulse collection: the Pulse and Pulse+ models, which call under the Pro edition in terms of specs and pricing.
