15 HYROX Essentials: WomenStuff-Approved Kit & Essentials to Carry You Through the Pain Cave
After years of working as an Editor and writer for…
If completing multiple HYROX solo races has taught me anything, it’s that laps around a moderately air-conditioned exhibition hall while your legs and lungs stage a mutiny is not something you wing. Whether you’re lining up for the doubles or going it alone, this isn’t a boutique workout class with a good playlist. It’s a test of endurance and strength, and the wrong kit will expose you faster than burnt out quads on a sled push.
It may sound like a simple race on paper, but attempting eight kilometres of compromised running interrupted every kilometer by exercises designed to turn your legs to jelly, is a humbling experience.

The average athlete takes 120 minutes to complete a HYROX race, which is a long time to be in the pain cave. Failing to prepare before your race and having the wrong kit on the day can quickly turn minor discomforts into an existential crises.
Slippy shoes, shorts that chafe or a T-shirt that traps sweat can all quietly ruin your race long before you’ve run out of steam. Thankfully, you still have plenty of time to prepare if you’re lining up in the start tunnel at HYROX Cape Town this year. Whether you’re tackling your first race or chasing marginal gains, this is the kit you need to make your HYROX preparations and race day more manageable.

Stay hydrated
Proper hydration support is key during your training block and on race day. Electrolytes are essential, especially during Cape Town’s summer months where dehydration can sneak up on you quickly. Primal Wellness A+Salt and Revive are great choices for electrolytes on-the-go.
If you’re not a fan of electrolytes sachets stay hydrated by sipping on iced tea. Carmién Cranberry & Hibiscus Cold Brew delivers sugar-free hydration and antioxidants without the crash. The tea has been specially developed to brew directly in cold water. Simply drop it into your bottle for a refreshing flavoured drink at the gym or on race day.

Nutrition and supplements
Training for HYROX places heavy demands on recovery, and protein is one of the most important staples for supporting lean muscle repair before and after sessions. The Metalab 300g tubs (exclusive to Checkers) are perfect for travel and your race day bag, the 900g whey protein tubs and Clear Whey options work well for at home during your training block.
Crafted from ethically sourced whey concentrate and isolate, Metalab products are cold microfiltered for a silky-smooth blend and deliver high-quality protein without any unnecessary additives. And if you forget to pack yours while travelling, you can now order Metalab directly via Checkers Sixty60 for delivery straight to your accommodation or even the HYROX venue.

On race weekend itself, energy gels or chews and carb-focused snacks are also smart additions, especially for race morning fuel. Gels keep energy levels steady mid-race so don’t be afraid to stash a gel or two in your shorts. To avoid stomach issues on race day I prefer honey-based energy gels like Enduren Original Honey Energy Gel. In the warm-up area I usually snack on a cereal bar to get some easy carbs in 20 minutes before the race. Another great option to top up those carbohydrates is to sip on a fruit juice like Sir Fruit Energy.
After the race I like to reach for a protein rich snack as soon as I can get my hands on it. With 27g of protein, First Choice High Protein Max is a post-workout game changer if you’re after the easiest and most delicious protein shake around. The original, First Choice High Protein Recovery, which offers 21g of protein, is another great choice. Nothing tackles post-race hunger quite like munching on a Nutrigo Protein Bar. This delicious protein bar is packed with 20g of protein to help you refuel after the race.

Care for your skin and muscles
HYROX doesn’t end at the finish line. These post-race aches tend to linger. You’re likely to have stiff calves, quads, shoulders and forearms so recovery becomes the difference between bouncing back to training for your do-over and shuffling through Monday in the office like you’ve suddenly aged a decade.
There are a few must-have toiletries that will get you through training and race day. Muscle rubs, massage guns and recovery slides aren’t indulgences. They’re tools. Use them as early as you can after your race. Pack your HYROX toiletries bag with items like magnesium spray, wet wipes, deodorant, and a mini first aid kit.

If you need to freshen up after your race, then the Eco Diva Micro Minis Set is the ideal travel companion for your race day bag. This little gems are powered by African botanicals, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, and superfoods to hydrate, rebalance, and restore skin at a cellular level.
Don’t forget about foot care, especially when recovering from an event. Kroko Heel Balm is a standout essential to keep your feet healthy and pain-free. Formulated with 20% urea and Vitamin D to deliver fast, intensive hydration, this heel balm helps soften rough, cracked heels and very dry skin, with noticeable relief in as little as 15 minutes.

Don’t forget the basics
It’s easy to focus on training and forget the basics, but admin essentials are critical on race day. Make sure you pack your ID or driver’s license, and that you have your race confirmation on your phone. Having cash or a card on hand is useful for vendors, or be sure to load payment details onto your phone or smartwatch. Store all of these items in a small organiser pouch so they don’t get lost in your main bag. We love this Thandana Travel Set in Leather.
For the ultimate race day carry-all you can’t go wrong with the Puma x HYROX Daily Backpack. This 34l backpack keeps up with the demands of race day with enough space for all your HYROX kit. This bag is made to be your go-to for a competition weekend, with padded straps, a ventilated back panel, and space for shoes, kit, and tech. Of course, the bag also sports a Velcro front panel to display all your race patches.

The best shoes for HYROX
While you’ll benefit loads from having all the right kit, your shoes are the single most important choice in HYROX. The race combines running, and strength exercises to push your body to the limit, and you’ll need a pair of shoes that can support you through both. Pick the wrong pair of shoes and you’ll be begging your doubles partner to slow down by the third station.
Running efficiency matters more than any single station. You’re covering eight kilometres on tired legs, so anything overly flat, stiff or heavy will become a burden. The sweet spot? A stable, responsive trainer with a wide base, controlled cushioning and enough grip to bite into slick flooring. You want something that stays planted during lateral movement, doesn’t collapse under load and still feels comfortable when you’re trying to find your rhythm again in the RoxZone.

The great news is Puma has debuted the first shoe purpose built for HYROX competition. The Puma Deviate Nitro Elite HYROX offers HYROX athletes the best of both worlds with a wider base for improved stability in burpees, wall balls and lunges while a full-length carbon fibre PwrPlate coupled with NitroFoam Elite gives you the boost you need for the runs.
Race gear for HYROX
Once you’ve got the shoes sorted it’s time to choose the rest of the gear you’ll be racing in.
Beat the heat inside the venue by opting for shorts on race day over.. The shorts you wear in a HYROX race need to be versatile above all else. Your lower body takes the biggest beating, and the wrong pair will quickly hamper your progress through chafing, slipping, bunching or restricting movement.
A compression short with a mid-thigh cut (around the five-inch mark) is the safest bet. The ideal pair balances mobility, support and durability. Stretchy, lightweight fabrics let you lunge, row and push without resistance, while subtle compression helps stabilise muscles and reduce fatigue.

Choosing the right top is another key decision you’ll have to make before race day. Optional in theory, useful in practice, a good t-shirt or vest earns its place in your race day kit once sweat, friction, and repeated contact with the floor enter the chat. Burpees, lunges and wall balls can turn bare skin into a liability, and by the back half of the race, chafing starts getting deeply personal.
Of course, you can race without a shirt. We’ve all seen the large percentage of men and women at a HYROX race collectively decide that shirts are no longer part of the plan. Feel free to participate in the shared delusion that being topless will make the stations easier and assist in heat management, but I’m all about having a nice comfortable top over my sports bra to provide an extra layer of protection for my delicate lady skin.

For those who have made the smart decision to wear a shirt, the right t-shirt or vest should be cut close without clinging, light without feeling flimsy and breathable enough to dry as you move rather than turning into a damp towel you’re dragging through your final kilometres. Flat seams, minimal stitching and a hem that stays put while bending, hinging and collapsing onto the floor are all non-negotiables. The HYROX shop offers a few nice options purpose-built for race day.
These aren’t flashy gimmicks. They’re tactical upgrades. In a sport where every second, breath and transition matters, the right gear keeps you marginally sharper than the athlete next to you, wondering why they signed up to enter this pain cave in the first place.
