2 Weeks to HYROX: 3 Best Supplements to Help You Train Smarter (Not Harder)
After years of working as an Editor and writer for…
So, you signed up for a HYROX race this year, and you’re starting to think about nutrition and supplements that can help give you that extra edge leading up to race day? If you’re registered for HYROX Cape Town this April, you don’t need me to tell you that with race day looming now is a crucial time to start thinking about how you can ensure you’re getting in good quality training days.
Whether it’s your first time on the HYROX dancefloor or you’re chasing a new PB, the final stretch before race day is all about smart strategy, not sweat. During these last weeks of training it’s all about knowing what to focus on to ensure you arrive fresh, fuelled, and ready to give your best.

How to train leading up to HYROX race day
It’s not about grinding harder — it’s about listening to your body and fuelling it well so you can show up on race day with confidence. It might be a hard pill to swallow but in these last training days you’re not going to get any fitter. Now is the time to ensure you are mentally, physically and emotionally prepared.
With two weeks to go, it’s taper time. That means dialing back the volume (by 40–60%) while keeping intensity just enough to stay sharp. Instead of long grind sessions, opt for shorter, race-specific work: sled pushes, ski-erg intervals, wall balls, and running technique drills.
My HYROX nutrition plan and supplements
Beyond the workouts, this is also the time to start thinking about supplements and nutrition that will help you line up ready to smash your race. Here are three supplements I’ve added to my routine leading up to HYROX to ensure I’m giving my body the best to aid recovery and boost performance. These will certainly give you a boost in these last few weeks leading up to race day but for best results consistent use is key. All three of these are well worth adding to your daily routine whether you’re training for a race or not.

Prioritise high quality protein
I don’t track macros religiously, but I always make sure I reach my protein targets every day to help optimise lean muscle mass, and then balance my meals with healthy fats and carbohydrates to keep my body fueled for training and give it what it needs to recover.
My daily protein goals are around 2.5g of protein per 1kg of ideal body weight (based on the Lyon Protocal). For days when I struggle to get in enough protein I lean on whey protein supplements like METALAB Truly Grass Fed Whey Protein Isolate.
From the lush green fields of Northern Ireland straight to your shaker, METALAB Truly Grass Fed is the cleanest, smoothest protein South Africa has ever seen. Right now, there’s a lot of talk about protein powders and hormone-disrupting contaminants so if you’re worried about heavy metals and the like sneaking into your supplements, METALAB promises no shortcuts, no compromises, just the good stuff.
The products are third-party verified so you know it’s safe to consume and you’re getting the best. Every batch of whey is tested at source for protein content, heavy metals, microbiological safety, and antibiotic residues, with additional South African verification.

There is not doubt this is one of the most delicious protein powders you’ll find on the shelf, but it’s also virtually lactose-free (less than 1g lactose per serving) and offers more than 87% protein by weight. This powder is made using 100% Whey Isolate and offers over 26g of protein per scoop!
It’s also soy-free and gut friendly. I never experience any gut issues or bloating when using METALAB. That’s because they use Sunflower lecithin instead of soy, plus DigeZyme enzymes for easy digestion and zero bloat.
The whey protein isolate used in METALAB Truly Grass Fed is the purest form of whey protein, which has been carefully filtered to give you more of what you want (high protein) and less of what you don’t (fat, carbohydrates, lactose).
The Vanilla Rodeo flavour has a smooth, creamy vanilla flavour with a subtle natural sweetness so it mixes easily with milk or water as a shake and can be baked into all sorts of beautiful high protein treats. It also shines in smoothies, oats, and pancakes. With no clumps and definitely no chalky aftertaste, METALAB is the Lamborghini of protein powders.

Hydrate and recover like a pro
Daily electrolytes have been a game-changer for me, especially after seriously sweaty HYROX training sessions. Right now, I’m obsessed with METALAB Moonwalk Electroytes. This easy-to-use daily electrolyte drink is a multitasking gem. Moonwalk isn’t just a hydration supplement, it’s also packed with the power of BCAAs for improved muscle recovery. Forget spending your days making sure you’re taking all your supplements, just one scoop of Moonwalk and your recovery and hydration supplements are sorted.
The refreshing flavour of this supplement makes rehydrating feel like a treat rather than a daily chore and it’s made a big difference to my energy levels and rate of recovery after tough workouts. If you’re looking for a powerhouse supplement to support your training leading up to race day, this is it! Just mix the recommended scoop size with 400ml of water and sip on the drink before, during, or after your workout for best results.

Don’t sleep on creatine
I also added Creatine Monohydrate to my daily supplements during training to help build lean muscle mass and speed up recovery. I feel like it’s made a massive difference and helped me keep up with the increased training load over my 3 month training period.
Creatine Monohydrate is readily available and relatively affordable so it’s an easy thing to add into your nutrition plan. METALAB Body Butler has been my go-to during my training because it’s another multi-tasking wonder that combines both creatine and collagen. This hardworking drink combines two powerhouse supplements to support how your body moves, repairs, and feels every day.
The magic of Body Butler is that it’s not just any creatine and collagen used to create this blend. For this product METALAB uses clinically studied, patented forms of creatine and collagen that have been chosen for purity, absorption and effectiveness. The supplement is crafted using German’s premium Creaz Creatine. Creaz is known for exceptional purity and stability, and supported by human clinical research. This is blended with AdvaPep Collagen Peptides which is made using a specialised enzymatic process that breaks it down into targeted peptides, helping your body absorb and use it more easily. Every batch is also fully traceable and rigorously tested to ensure purity and quality.
