Fans of Jamie Oliver’s uncomplicated, wholesome food where delighted when the chef’s Italian focused restaurant opened its doors at Johannesburg’s trendy Melrose Arch in 2016. Two years later and Jamie’s Italian Johannesburg is still going strong, attracting new and regulars with ever-changing specials and exciting new menu options. The latest menu additions offer something for everyone to enjoy with a focus on showcasing true essence of South African chow. With 16 new, scrumptious dishes to try, ranging from burgers to bucatini, the Jamie’s Italian winter menu, will definitely make winter in Joburg a little more exciting.
The winter menu includes a wide range of new meals, with 5 of the new additions being inspired by South African dishes offering diners a chance to sample classic Italian dishes with a local and lekker twist. The 5 SA-inspired dishes include the Seafood Bucatini, Buttermilk-fried Chicken Burger, Herby Lemon Chicken, Spicy Chilli Beef Pizza , and Bistecca alla Fiorentine.
The Seafood Bucatini, tossed with Jamie’s Italian freshly made bucatini pasta, sounds like a seafood lover’s dream! Think sustainably-caught fresh white fish, mussels from Saldanha Bay and calamari cooked with succulent cherry tomatoes, white wine, parsley and chilli. If you’re in the mood for a burger, you can’t go wrong with the Buttermilk-fried chicken burger made using free-range buttermilk-battered chicken breast served in a soft brioche bun with Calabrian chilli mayo, fontal cheese, tomato and rocket.
Another SA-inspired winner is the Herby lemon chicken – a dish that combines flash-grilled free-range boneless chicken baked with lemon and thyme, served on a bed of green beans, baby potatoes, cherry tomatoes, olives, basil and red onion along with freshly-made basil pesto and pine nuts. If you’re a red meat fan you’d probably prefer the Bistecca alla Fiorentine – a 450g 28-day dry-aged T-bone steak, perfectly grilled and topped with a garlic butter and herb sauce, served with a side and sauce of your choice.
Like all Jamie’s Italian dishes, each new item is freshly made onsite every day and all ingredients are locally and lovingly sourced with a focus on sustainability, animal welfare and the freshest produce. The rest of the winter menu brings bold flavours, old classics and tasty new healthy twists. Think a slow-cooked lamb shank served with olive oil-infused mash with a rich gravy and salsa verde; and a mouthwatering oxtail lasagne made with a flavourful 12-hour herby oxtail ragù, Béchamel, mozzarella and Parmesan.
