Today I found the holy grail of fashion! If there’s one thing you need to know about me it’s that I am OBSESSED with the 1950s – particularly 1950s pin-up fashion. If given the chance to use a time machine to transport myself back to any time in history, without thinking I would immediately head back to the 1950s (seriously, a girl can dream). Which is why I was beyond excited when I discovered Retrospective, a retro fashion store selling 50s-style fashions for the modern woman. It’s true ladies, dreams do come true!
But wait, I haven’t even told you the best bit yet – their retro fashions are available to all South Africa ladies. With stores in Brooklyn, Pretoria and Parkhurst, Johannesburg as well as an online store, Retrospective is your one-stop retro shop. What I love most about Retrospective is that their pieces aren’t too ‘costumey’ – sure, they’re retro inspired but your average modern women wouldn’t feel absolutely ridiculous when wearing one of the beautiful dresses or donning a pair of the oh-so-cute high heeled pumps.
With a range of 50s and 60s inspired dresses, skirts, tops, swimwear, coats, shoes and accessories the store is the ideal place to shop for a bit of vintage glam. All of the pieces available from Retrospective are of high quality and are almost impossible to find anywhere else in South Africa. With everything from flared skirts, sweetheart necklines and sleek hourglass silhouettes to bold prints, pastel colours and nautical themed details there’s something for every shape and size at Retrospective. Most of the items in store start at a small and go up to an x-large and are flattering to all body types.
I love that Retrospective is all about inspiring women to feel feminine, sensuous and elegant the way only vintage and retro dresses can. By celebrating a time when dressing impeccably was a way of life and when fashion reflected mix of conservatism and glamour and oozed girl-next-door freshness with a touch of sexiness Retrospective is able to make women feel beautiful no matter their shape or size.
Personally I can’t get enough of the stunning flared skirt dresses which start at R750 – the dresses would be the perfect fit for a special occasion. The store also stocks a stunning collection of retro bridesmaids dresses (perfect for vintage weddings), handbags, shoes and more for the vintage loving shopper.
If you’re in Joburg or Pretoria then lucky you because the Retrospective stores are beyond beautiful. The stores are made to look like a vintage shopping paradise and are an absolute pleasure to visit. Make sure you pop in soon to swoon over their beautiful vintage pieces and feel like you’ve transported back in time.
