Eliud Kipchoge is widely regarded as the greatest marathon runner of all time. The two-time Olympic gold medalist is known for breaking boundaries and for becoming the first human to run a marathon in under two hours. These days, as the most decorated marathon runner in history enters a new season in his career, he says is using a new training partner to drive his goals.

Speaking at a Huawei event in Cape Town, Kipchoge was full of praise for the Watch GT Runner 2, mentioning how the data gathered from his fitness tracker has helped his coaching team optimise his training, recovery, and race day strategy. The Huawei Watch GT Runner 2 was developed alongside Kipchoge who drove innovations like “Marathon mode” on this latest edition of the Watch GT Runner.

Cape Town welcomes Kipchoge

This past weekend Eliud Kipchoge completed the first stop of his highly anticipated global marathon tour in Cape Town. Kipchoge’s appearance at the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon carried significance far beyond the race itself. The event marked the opening chapter of Eliud’s World Tour, an ambitious two-to-three-year journey that will see him compete in marathons across all seven continents.

For Kipchoge, beginning the tour in Cape Town held special meaning.

“Africa is where my journey as a runner began and where the foundation of my success is deeply rooted,” Kipchoge said. “To start this World Tour in Cape Town is very special. It is about celebrating the strength of African running and inspiring the next generation.”

The race also marked Kipchoge’s first official marathon race on African soil, adding another historic layer to an already memorable weekend for South African sport.

Following the marathon weekend, Huawei South Africa hosted an exclusive sunset dialogue session with Kipchoge and invited guests in Cape Town. During the intimate engagement, Kipchoge shared insights into his personal running journey, his philosophy around discipline and consistency, and how intelligent wearable technology, like his special edition Watch GT Runner 2, supports his training, recovery, and marathon preparation.

Guests were also given the opportunity to engage directly with the marathon icon, exploring the growing role of technology in modern running culture and performance.

A partnership inspired by possibility

Kipchoge’s presence in Cape Town is not coincidental for Huawei. The Kenyan legend serves as Huawei’s global ambassador for the Huawei Watch GT Runner, a partnership that goes well beyond a traditional endorsement. Built on a shared belief in discipline, performance, and human potential, Huawei says the partnership reflects its broader vision of enabling “Infinite Possibilities” through intelligent technology.

Together with the dsm-firmenich Running Team, Huawei and Kipchoge have been collaborating to shape the next generation of intelligent running technology, combining elite athlete insight with advanced wearable engineering to help runners at every level train smarter and recover better.

The result of that collaboration is the newly launched Huawei Watch GT Runner 2. Five years in the making, and built to be the most intelligent running watch Huawei has ever produced.

A watch built for every finish line

The Huawei Watch GT Runner 2 is a complete marathon system, one developed with direct input from elite runners, including Kipchoge himself, and designed to support every stage of a runner’s journey, from training plan to post-race recovery.

At just 43.5 grams, crafted from aerospace-grade titanium, the watch is as light as it is capable. Its 3D floating antenna architecture delivers a positioning signal 3.5 times stronger than its predecessor, maintaining precise GPS tracking even through tunnels, dense urban environments, and shaded trails. An industry-first Intelligent Marathon Mode tracks World Athletics Label Road Races in real time, offering dynamic pace guidance and smart refuel reminders to help runners manage their effort kilometre by kilometre.

The watch’s non-intrusive lactate threshold detection algorithm provides unprecedented insight into training intensity, while personalised weekly training plans adapt dynamically to long-term performance data. After the race, detailed recovery guidance helps athletes come back stronger. The Huawei Watch GT Runner 2 has up to 14 days of battery life and is compatible with iOS, Android, and Huawei devices.
