Conscious Sipping with Organic Wine by Sophie Germanier

Organic Wine by Sophie Germanier

While many of us are engaging in more mindful consumption habits when it comes to buying everything from food to clothing, do we stop to consider what goes into the wine on our tables and in our glass? From vine and soil to cellar, a new generation of savvy consumers are focusing on organic wines, not only from a wellness perspective but from an environmental and Fairtrade labour perspective too.

Launched in 2020, Organic Wine by Sophie Germanier speaks to these new generation consumers while also tackling the goal of inspiring all consumers to choose wines that prioritise the environment and society. Through her organic, sustainable wines, Sophie hopes to show South African wine lovers that quality and consciousness can go hand in hand. It’s all about encouraging a shift toward more responsible choices in the wine industry one bottle at a time.

With every bottle, Sophie is not only creating exceptional wine but also championing a vision of sustainability—one that is mindful of both the land and the people who nurture it.

What is organic wine?

Certified organic wines made from certified organic vineyards (standards vary from country to country and within EU/US/UK markets) are generally free from the use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers in the vineyards, and generally free from additives, commercial yeasts, non-organic fining agents (albumen and isinglass) and preservatives in the cellar.

For Sophie Germanier and her team, sustainability is at the core of everything they do. All Sophie Germanier wines are certified organic in both Europe and the United States, which means no pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilisers are used to grow the grapes used in the wine making process. In the cellar, the team minimises sulfite use to maintain a pure and natural product. They’re also embracing regenerative practices in the vineyards, working closely with farming partners to restore and maintain soil health, ensuring long-term sustainability.

To reduce the final product’s carbon footprint (another priority for Sophie Germanier), lightweight bottles are used. This helps lower emissions during transportation, and reinforces a commitment to environmental responsibility at every stage of production.

But the wins don’t stop there, the range is also Vegan Certified. No animal-derived products are used in the winemaking process for these vegan-friendly wines.

Celebrating the diversity of South Africa’s terroir

Rather than sticking to grapes grown in one area, Organic Wine by Sophie Germanier focuses on capturing the incredible diversity of South Africa’s terroir. From the coastal vineyards of the West Coast, influenced by the salty sea breeze, to the dry-farmed vineyards of Swartland, each region offers distinct flavours that reflect its unique character.

By sourcing grapes from these diverse areas, Sophie Germanier is able to produce wines that honour the land, while supporting the people and communities who make it all possible.

The ability to select grapes for their distinct flavours means wine lovers can enjoy varietals that celebrate each style of wine at its best. Some of my favourite examples of this are the Organic Wine by Sophie Germanier Pinotage 2025, Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Shiraz 2024, and the Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2024.

Sophie Germanier Organic Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2024 (R150)

This beautiful wine is an excellent reflection of South Africa’s unique terroir. The vintage highlights the remarkable depth that only matured, deep-rooted vines provide to the final profile. If it’s a premium experience you’re after, this award-winning wine will deliver.

The 2024 vintage opens with enticing aromas of white peach, zesty lime, and subtle honeysuckle. On the palate, you will find a beautiful tension between crisp acidity and a rich, creamy texture. This complexity stems from the old vines, which naturally produce smaller, more concentrated yields. The finish lingers with a flinty minerality that reflects the unique granite soils of the region. It serves as a testament to the harmony between nature and meticulous winemaking.

Pair it with: Grilled seafood, creamy pasta dishes, or zesty lemon herb chicken. This exceptional wine is a must-sip for lovers of Chenin Blanc. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on a bottle of this vintage, make sure you grab it with both hands.

Organic Wine by Sophie Germanier is available at online as well as at Pick n Pay, UCOOK, and Faithful To Nature.
