5 Divine Indian Eateries in Cape Town


The chill of winter is by no means over, so while you’re still wrapping up warm on the outside, why not treat your taste-buds to the sizzling flavours of India? There are few things as warming on a cold night than a spicy, fragrant curry! Indian cuisine, like its country of origin, is as varied and eclectic as they come with an endless array of flavour profiles which means finding the right eatery can be tricky. Even within our own country Indian food has its own distinct identity (hello, Durban!). Luckily, Cape Town’s Indian restaurant options are just as varied. We’ve whittled down from the many available options our top 5 favourite places to find the very best in Indian curries.

1. Maharajah

For some of the best views of Table Mountain, while you dine on fragrant northern and southern style curries, Maharajah has become something of an Indian food institution in the Cape. Signature dishes to look forward to include butter chicken, a sublime fish curry and a falling-off-the-bone lamb curry.

2. Bombay Brasserie

For a more elegant experience, the Bombay Brasserie at the five star Taj Hotel in the heart of the city offers a diverse menu consisting of both traditional and contemporary dishes. Try their authentic Indian masalas, the spiced coconut and mango Allepey seafood curry, or the simply divine saffron lamb shank curry. Be sure to try the palate cleansers between courses for a truly Indian experience!

Featuring foods from India to Asia to the Middle East, there’s something for everyone at this unique canteen-style spot. Think heavenly Tandooris, biryanis, kebabs, shwarmas and made-while-you-wait naan breads. Prices are very reasonable and portions are massive so go hungry!

For those in the Southern Suburbs with a hankering for a good curry, Bombay Chilli has branches in Muizenberg and Plumstead. With strong north Indian influences, this cozy, casual bistro-like spot is loved for its mouthwatering homemade naan bread, roti rolls and extensive curry menu. Choose between vegetarian, seafood, lamb or chicken options while you enjoy the laid back atmosphere. Hungry? Try the quarter, half or full chicken tikka! Yum!

5. Inside Lounge

You can also choose from a selection of authentic Indian side dishes like pickled mango relish, raitas and crunchy poppadoms. Even better is their dessert!
