Ice Cream Sandwich Shop, Crumbs & Cream Opens in Sea Point! [Review]
Ladies, our foodie dreams have been realised – there is now a dedicated ice cream sandwich shop in Sea Point, Cape Town! That’s right; if the idea of eating creamy ice cream smooshed between two morish, melt-in-your-mouth cookies sounds like heaven to you then this find is for you. We’ve seen a lot of food trends come and go over the past year (cronuts, freak waffles, pancake cakes, you name it) but none of them have been quite as sweet as the ice cream sarmie. So, forget splashing out on a scoop or two of boring old gelato for your next Sea Point Promenade walk; next time pop into Crumbs & Cream Sea Point for a touch of childhood nostalgia and an ice cream sandwich.
What started as a modest food truck at the Waterfront has now blossomed into a fully fledged business that is taking the Cape Town ice cream market by storm. Owners, and sisters, Shahar and Or Peled started their ice cream sandwich business to make people happy and now, just a short while later they’ve made people happy enough to warrant opening a bricks-and-mortar store. And, with so many great new spots opening up on Regent Road, Sea Point, we couldn’t think of a better location for their first store!
One of the coolest things about Crumbs & Cream is that you get to create your own cookie with a wide range of cookie and gelato flavours available as well as a selection of toppings to finish it off. The process is quite simple – first pick your cookies (choose from flavours such as Red Velvet, Chocolate Brownie, Rainbow, Choc Chip, and more), add a spread to your order (think Nutella, peanut butter and dulce de leche), then pick your ice cream flavour (delights like Choc Mint, Ferrero Rocher, Wild Berry, Snickers, and more await), and finally select a topping (there’s cookie crumbs, mini smarties, chocolate shavings, and more). Once you’ve made your selection you just need to sit back and watch as the super friendly staff behind the counter work their magic and assemble your sarmie right before your eyes.
I went for broke and chose to construct a delicious concoction of Oreo cookie filled with French Vanilla ice cream and topped with cookie crumbs and mini smarties (you only live once!). The combination was divine and I must say every component of the ice cream sarmie was to die for – the cookies were moist, just the right amount of crumbly, and so morish while the ice cream was super creamy and sweet. I would definitely recommend the French Vanilla gelato if you’re going for a chocolate cookie and toppings as it helps to balance out the flavours quite nicely and add some pizzaz to your ice cream sarmie.
And, in the name of journalistic research (I’m quite dedicated to my job) I also made sure to try some of the healthier options in store (yes ladies, there are healthier options!) Just for you, I also made a point of trying the Banting Cookie (a deliciously soft creation made with coconut) and the sugar-free chocolate ice cream and was pretty much blown away. The sugar-free ice cream is sweetened with xylitol but you won’t even be able to taste the difference between this stuff and regular ice cream. Of course, the Banting cookie isn’t as crumbly as the other cookies on offer but it is a great substitute if you’re trying to be good. There’s also a vegan sorbet on offer for those who have cut out dairy.
So, how much will all this happiness cost you? A Crumbs & Cream ice cream sarmie will set you back R35. If ice cream sandwiches aren’t your thing (it could happen) then you can also munch on a simple cookie or five on its own. The cookies can be bought singular for R12 each or R100 for 10. The store also sells gelato in a cone or cup for R25 for 1 scoop, and R45 for 2 scoops, and finally for coffee lovers, there’s a cookie and coffee special for R30. They’re also offering takeaway freezer ice-cream sandwiches to order for special occasions and events; just make sure you place your order 24 hours ahead.
