A Heritage Weekend to Remember: Vuur & Heirloom Come Together for One-Off Weekend Table at Cape Grace
Heritage Day is a special occasion here in South Africa. In fact, it’s basically law to light a braai on the day and celebrate our great nation. If you’re not so talented with the tongs and prefer to leave the braai mastery up to someone else, Vuur and Heirloom are offering Capetonians a more refined, low-friction way to honour the tradition of celebrating Heritage Day with food cooked over an open flame.
This Heritage Day weekend, the Cape Grace’s Heirloom restaurant will welcome Chef Shaun Scrooby and the Vuur team for a four-hands collaboration that brings two distinct expressions of South African cuisine to a single table. Taking place over lunch and dinner on 25 and 26 September, the collaboration opens Vuur’s fire-driven, provenance-led cooking to a wider audience within the world of Cape Grace, for four seatings only.

A natural pairing for Heritage weekend
The invitation to Chef Shaun Scrooby and his team follows that same logic. VUUR has built its name on national storytelling told through fire, provenance and a firm sense of place. At Heirloom, Cape Grace approaches that same territory from the direction of refined dining, working through ingredient, memory and technique.
Bringing the two together creates two distinct readings of one South African table, hosted within the world of Cape Grace, and, for this weekend only, gives many more guests the opportunity to experience Vuur’s magic without leaving the city.
Chef-owner Shaun Scrooby’s fire-driven dining destination on Remhoogte Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, opened in April 2022. The destination eatery was a built around a single discipline: cooking with fire in its most direct form. Every dish at Vuur is shaped by smoke, heat and timing, using wood-fired technique as both method and philosophy. Given the overwhelming demand for the original table, Scrooby opened a second restaurant, Vuur Goose Island, in December 2023, an intimate chef’s table set on a small island within the estate’s dam.
2026 has been a landmark year for Vuur, making this opportunity an extra special one for food lovers. Vuur was awarded Two Stars in the 2026 Eat Out Awards, placing it among the sixty-six finest restaurants in South Africa and in the Top 10 of the Cape’s wine farm restaurants. The restaurant also holds No. 52 on the World’s Top 101 Steakhouses list. Trust us, this is one experience you don’t want to miss out on.
Your Heritage weekend plans sorted
Heritage Day weekend gives the pairing its occasion. It is the moment the country turns deliberately toward its own culture, where food and heritage are openly celebrated. Across these few days, Cape Grace and Heirloom become a meeting place for regional produce, inherited methods and the traditions behind both, cooked by teams who treat that inheritance as something living rather than archival.
The table itself
The menu is written once and served once. Guests take their seats at Cape Grace for a setting that brings VUUR into the city for the weekend, with dishes shaped by two sets of hands and two genuinely distinct points of view. The five-course menu will be paired with wine for a special dinning experience created specifically for this moment, this place, and this collaboration. It will not be served again.
“South African cooking was never one story, and it was never meant to be,” explains Wesli Jacobs, Executive Chef, Heirloom. “At Cape Grace, Heirloom gives us a space to bring different voices around the same table and to keep that conversation moving forward. Chef Shaun Scrooby and his team work with fire and with an instinct for place that I have long admired. Bringing that into Heirloom over Heritage Weekend feels like the right way to mark the occasion, in the company of people who care where this cuisine is headed.”
Shaun Scrooby, Chef and Owner at Vuur went on to explain why the collaboration is so special. “Fire has always been about place for us, it tells you what’s around you and what the land is giving that day. Heirloom works from a different angle, but we’re circling the same thing: food that says something true about where it comes from. Cooking alongside Wesli and his team for Heritage Weekend, in the city, for guests who might never make it out to the farm, feels like exactly the right way to share that.”
