If you’re the type of lass who loves a good doughnut then you’ve no doubt be on the hunt for the best, most decadent, doughnuts in all of Cape Town – well I’m here to tell you to stop the search because I’ve found them. I’m talking doughnuts so indulgent, so spectacular that you’ll be craving them for days after your first bite. Doughnuts that are too good not to share with someone you really, really like… a lot. So, clear your schedule for the weekend and get your dessert stomach ready because it’s time to pop into Sea Point’s most loved dessert spot, My Sugar. I can’t believe it took me so long to visit this quaint little spot (it’s been on my list for ages!) but now that I have I am completely besotted!
The first thing you need to know about My Sugar is that it’s a dessert only kind of place, so if you’re not into the sweet stuff then this is not the place for you. From over-the-top hot chocolate shots and heavenly milkshakes in all sorts of divine flavours to handmade chocolate, ice cream sandwiches, and of course, beyond tempting doughnuts, My Sugar is the type of place you go to appreciate the sweeter things in life with friends and family. Grab a table inside the intimate spot and solve the world’s problems while you tuck into a yummy doughnut paired with a cup of single origin coffee, Red Espresso or loose leaf tea. You can also while away the hours playing one of the many classic board games on offer at each table, or if you’re alone, read one of the many books on chocolate. No matter what you do during your visit there’s no doubt that My Sugar is soon going to be your new go-to spot for catch ups with friends. Trust me, tea and cake with the gals has never been quite this good!
But enough distractions, let’s get back to those doughnuts, shall we? The new range of chocolate coated and dessert-filled gourmet doughnuts, available at My Sugar, offers diners a variety of must-try flavours. Coated doughnut flavours include Caramelised White Chocolate (topped with butterscotch popcorn and crunchy salted caramel pearls); Milk Chocolate Ganache (topped with caramelised coconut and a drizzle of caramel); and the S’more (topped with dark chocolate ganache and toasted marshmallow) while dessert-filled wonders consist of Crème Brûlée (filled with vanilla bean custard and coated in a crack of caramel); Lemon Meringue (filled with lemon curd dessert and topped with torched meringue); and Chocolate Mousse and Peanut Butter (filled with a creamy chocolate mousse and topped with candied peanuts).
I tried the Chocolate Mousse and Peanut Butter doughnut as well as the Crème Brûlée and after the first bite of each, I was convinced I’d found the best doughnuts in town. The Chocolate Mousse doughnut, while super-rich, is a treat like no other. The mousse filling is oh-so-creamy creamy while the crackle of the candied peanuts on top perfectly compliment the soft and fluffy filling. This doughnut is not for the faint hearted but is a great option to share with a chocolate-loving friend. I couldn’t finish it in one sitting so be prepared to go home with a takeaway. If you’re after something a little less daunting then I would recommend the Crème Brûlée – it’s a little less rich but still completely indulgent and the combination of vanilla bean custard and caramel crunch will make your taste buds dance.
The My Sugar doughnuts are available every day at R35 each and are made using only the best house-made ingredients and crafted couverture chocolate. And, if for some reason, these flavours don’t appeal to you then fear not because the My Sugar team have confirmed that they will be experimenting with new flavours going forward. Customers can look forward to flavours like apple pie, cheesecake and chocolate fudge in the future and can even order a chocolate tower as an alternative to a birthday cake (or wedding cake!) – because you only live once and life is too short to not eat doughnuts.
