If you love having a golden glow without having to roast in the sun like a rotisserie chicken then boy have I got a discovery for you. Spray tanning has changed the game for pigment disadvantaged folk like myself and while getting a glow from a bottle instead of the sun might still have a bit of a stigma attached to it I’m all for doing anything you can to look your best while avoiding the nasty effects too much sun can have on your skin. Of course, it is important to note that not all spray tans or self-tanners are created equal. So, if you’re thinking of taking the plunge and getting a good spray then you need to hear all about my experience with the gold standard of spray tans, Vita Liberata. I tried the organic spray tan brand to see how it measured up to spray tans I’ve had in the past so you know just what to expect before stepping into the tanning booth.
Vita Liberata launched in 2007 and in 2011 they became the first completely non-toxic tanning brand, developing a collection of tan solutions free from parabens, perfume, alcohol and all chemicals of concern. I love that the products are completely non-toxic and 80 percent organic (the products contain natural extracts like ylang-ylang, seaweed, pomegranate and grape) so they’re good for your skin and the environment. According to Vita Liberata, their ingredients are the purest in the tanning world with natural, certified organic and Ecocert approved extracts being key to their formulas. This is huge for spray tan loving ladies as these organic products not only help protect the health of the tanning therapists, who use the product all day long, but also the clients whose skin has to put up with the product for a few days afterwards. But it’s not all about getting that must-have glow, Vita Liberata was also designed with your skin’s health in mind and their main aim is to offer clients a conditioning skincare treatment that also tans the skin.
But let’s talk about my results using the brand. I popped down to my favourite beauty salon, Cape Town Beauty Bar, to give it a try and stepped out of the tanning booth a golden goddess of note. Hands down, the thing I love most about Vita Liberata is how natural it looks – that orange Oompa Loompa vibe isn’t a good look for anyone! I convinced the boyfriend to do it with me, so I could compare our results and was amazed to see that even though we had the same spray tan colour, our results were completely different. The boyfriend’s skin is a little more open to tanning than mine and his tan came out a little more defined than mine did. Our tanning guru explained that Vita Liberata is unique in that almost no two clients have the same colour results. This is because the product works with your skin to bring out your natural colour – or basically the colour you would go if you were to tan in the sun. Both of our tans were super subtle and natural and I loved that there were no streaks to speak of.
Another plus of this product is the fact that it dries quickly (hence why there is no streaking). Which means no more sitting around completely starkers for 15 minutes while you wait for it to dry. The product dried almost instantly and I loved that I could put my clothing back on about 2 minutes after the spray tan and go about my day. I had to leave the product on for 8 hours to let the colour develop and at first I was a little worried the tan was too dark for me but once I had a shower the colour looked absolutely awesome. But that’s not all – Vita Liberata also smells great and moisturises your skin! You don’t have to put up with that weird oat or wet biscuit smell when using this product and your skin feels wonderfully soft afterwards.
I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is curious about spray tanning or anyone who has tried spray tanning before but didn’t like the results. With Vita Liberata, there’s no orange tinge and the tan lasts a good few days if you look after it carefully. Mine lasted about 10 days and faded naturally over a few days. It’s the perfect way to look your best before a big occasion or beach holiday but this product is also super addictive – once you’ve experienced the joys of a healthy glow you will want to go back again and again.
