Review: Enjoy that Summer Feeling with Loxtonia Artisanal Cider

Loxtonia Cider

There’s never been a better time to be a cider lover. As the popularity of craft cider continues to grow, local producers of this delicious tipple are always introducing new and exciting flavours to the cider market. One of the OG’s of the local cider game is Loxtonia Farm in the Western Cape, who joined the South African craft cider party way back in 2018. Loxtonia Cider’s all-natural premium range of artisanal ciders offers cider drinkers the chance to enjoy that summer feeling all year round, come rain or shine.

Located in Ceres, the family-run Loxtonia Farm was the very first Cidery in the Ceres valley and in 2018, its cider range set the craft beverage scene alight with an alternative option to the popular craft beer scene that was all the rage. The farm identified a gap in the South African market for high quality, fine apple cider and turned dreams into a reality by working on the perfect blend of ingredients to create it. The ciders remain true to Loxtonia’s goal towards sustainable farming too, meaning this delicious cider range is easy on the environment!

In line with the farm’s key philosophy “Orchard to Bottle” the Loxtonia Cider range is free from preservatives and artificial additives and is made from freshly-pressed, naturally fermented, hand-picked apples. The range has been crafted to satisfy the tastes of a more modern generation of cider-lovers and offers four refreshing flavours to choose from in 340m bottles. What’s more, with just 58 calories per bottle, it’s a great option for a healthier alternative at your next braai.

Flavours include a Crispy Apple Cider (refreshingly fruity and easy-to-drink with a smooth, crisp finish), Sparkling Apple Cider (boasts crisp flavours of green apple with hints of fruity Prosecco and a sparkling finish), Stone Fruit Flavoured Apple Cider (perfectly balanced, fruity with notes of nectarine and apple), and Pale Amber Apple Cider (well-rounded with notes of caramel and an apple finish).

I love the Stone Fruit Flavoured Apple Cider with its bright, fresh peach aroma and notes of nectarine and apple. This elegant cider has a balanced sweetness that ends off with a long dry apple finish to create a characterful, fruity and refreshing cider. I also love the Crispy Apple Cider for when I’m in the mood for a more classic-style cider that’s easy drinking.

For beer lovers, the Pale Amber Apple Cider, is an interesting option when you’re looking for something new to try. The beer styled cider wasn’t my cup of tea but it may appeal to cider lovers who love more experimental flavours.

The Loxtonia Cider range is available at leading liquor stores nationwide at a recommended price of R95 per 4-pack.
