South Africa is often praised for its excellent wine but a winery in Joburg? The Highveld isn’t exactly known for its wines but that may soon change with yet another winery opening its doors in the City of Gold. Joburg’s second ever winery, Gerakaris Family Wines is looking to up the ante and give the Western Cape a run for its money with a beautiful winery and tasting room opening to the public in Craighall Park!
Occupying a restored farm building in the suburban area, this is the first Johannesburg winery of its kind open for walk-in tastings and sales. Gerakaris is a ‘garagiste’ winery, meaning that the wine produced is from grapes grown in another area. In this case, the grapes are grown in the Swartland region over 1200km away, and the entire winemaking process is done onsite at Gerakaris.
The wine itself is high-quality, which is not surprising considering the owner – Kath Gerakaris – is from wine-loving New Zealand and has a post-graduate diploma in viticulture and oenology.
The Gerakaris Family Wines range currently offers two Chenin Blancs and two Syrahs (one is a 2014 vintage) for you to enjoy under the shade of a willow tree in the quaint back garden of the winery – sounds like the perfect Sunday afternoon to us!
Find Gerakaris Family Wines at 20 Marlborough Avenue, Craighall Park, Johannesburg. The opening hours are from 12:00 to 17:00 from Wednesday to Friday; 10:00 to 15:00 on Saturday and 11:00 to 14:00 on Sunday.
